Our area of focus this week is MATH and we’re going to explore it by making a pool noodle periscope.

The pool noodle periscope helps children learn about angles, reflections, and math while exploring their own neighborhood.

All you’ll need for this activity are:

  • A pool noodle
  • Scissors
  • 2 small round mirrors
  • Duct tape for this activity.

Kids will love playing secret agent with this craft and seeing how these simple items come together to make a fun tool.

Once you have your supplies ready, find the step-by-step process here.

Our area of focus this week is TECHNOLOGY and we’re learning by making bracelets!

These cute bracelets only need two things; beads and pipe cleaners!

Using binary coding, follow the pattern to make secret messages or write out your name! Choosing two colours works best for this activity, one colour representing the number 1 and one representing 0. Some kids have short names, they can create bracelets, but if your child has a long name, they can make a necklace.

Once you have your supplies ready, find the step-by-step process here.

Let’s learn about butterflies! Using our art skills, we will walk through the lifecycle of a butterfly from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis and finally butterfly.

  • Pipe cleaners (2-inch piece in black for the butterfly, and any other colors you want for your caterpillar cut to 6 inches)
  • Pencil
  • Black marker or crayon
  • Liquid glue
  • Scissors

One of the great things about Spring and Summer is that we can enjoy the birds. But, after their long flight back home, the birds are hungry! So, a perfect outdoor project to do with your children is to make a bird feeder. There are several ways to make feeders using recyclable materials.

This blog gives some great examples of materials to use and ways in which you can do this activity. Be sure to read the end of the blog to see the STEAM concepts learned in this activity.

Trying to find a way to get rid of old electronics? We have a great way to upcycle them!

Today we’re focusing on the T in S.T.E.A.M which is Technology.

Instead of throwing out an old computer, phone, toy or any other electronic device, unplug it and safely unscrew the device’s backing to expose the electronic parts inside! Make sure to look for sharp pieces first and remove any parts that could be dangerous. Then, assist your child and have them explore the inner features that make up the device to understand how it works.

Need an idea for all those leftover Easter eggs? Let’s make Fizzy Eggs!

For the month of May, we are providing easy, educational, and fun Spring themed activities that you can do with supplies easily accessible from around the house! Like all those leftover Easter plastic eggs.

Here’s a way to incorporate S.T.E.A.M. into your child’s learning this Spring:

Fizzy Eggs Spring Science Activity:

  • Add 3 cups of baking soda to a bowl
  • Next, add some food colouring of your choice
  • Mix in ¼ cup of water, stir until it makes a paste
  • Fill up half your egg with the baking soda paste
  • Insert a toy or trinket and fill up the rest of your egg with the paste
  • Close up your egg to completely cover the toy inside
  • Place your egg in the freezer for at least an hour

Now it’s time for the fizzing!

  • Remove your egg from the freezer & carefully open it up.
  • Pour white vinegar into a bowl
  • Invite your child to use a dropper and fill it with the vinegar
  • Squeeze the vinegar onto your egg until the toy is revealed!

Wait! Weren’t you taller this morning? So what happened during the day? Why are you shorter at night than in the morning?

Today, we’ll learn from the Canadian Space Agency how gravity affects our height. Get a free downloadable worksheet here and help your kids learn how gravity is so focused on keeping things down that it makes us shorter throughout the day. Beforehand, ensure you have the necessary tools: a measuring tape, masking tape, a book and a family member or friend. Once you’re done, enjoy this fun space-themed story of kids who fly to space to recuse their puppy!

Incorporating STEAM learning with little kids can seem daunting if you don’t have a background in Science or the capacity to create fun activities daily. But, lucky for us, that’s not the case. The Growing Thinker is here to remind us of the simplicity of STEAM learning and how easy it is to bring it into everyday life. The core of STEAM learning is to encourage and build a child’s critical thinking skills, which you can do even on a nature walk. Read more here and try it out on your next activity.
