ALL ABOARD: WE’RE GATHERING STEAM

Trying to find a way to get rid of old electronics? We have a great way to upcycle them!

Today we’re focusing on the T in S.T.E.A.M which is Technology.

Instead of throwing out an old computer, phone, toy or any other electronic device, unplug it and safely unscrew the device’s backing to expose the electronic parts inside! Make sure to look for sharp pieces first and remove any parts that could be dangerous. Then, assist your child and have them explore the inner features that make up the device to understand how it works.

Need an idea for all those leftover Easter eggs? Let’s make Fizzy Eggs!

For the month of May, we are providing easy, educational, and fun Spring themed activities that you can do with supplies easily accessible from around the house! Like all those leftover Easter plastic eggs.

Here’s a way to incorporate S.T.E.A.M. into your child’s learning this Spring:

Fizzy Eggs Spring Science Activity:

  • Add 3 cups of baking soda to a bowl
  • Next, add some food colouring of your choice
  • Mix in ¼ cup of water, stir until it makes a paste
  • Fill up half your egg with the baking soda paste
  • Insert a toy or trinket and fill up the rest of your egg with the paste
  • Close up your egg to completely cover the toy inside
  • Place your egg in the freezer for at least an hour

Now it’s time for the fizzing!

  • Remove your egg from the freezer & carefully open it up.
  • Pour white vinegar into a bowl
  • Invite your child to use a dropper and fill it with the vinegar
  • Squeeze the vinegar onto your egg until the toy is revealed!

If you try this at home, please share how it went and don’t forget to tag us on our social media pages so we can enjoy it too!

On International Women’s Day, help kids celebrate the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.

In the words of IFLScience, women are at the forefront of scientific research, historically and today. There are so many scientific breakthroughs that wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of women, and doubtless there will be many more in years to come.

Women might be pitifully underrepresented in STEM fields, making up just 34 percent of the workforce – Black, Latina, and Indigenous women are even more poorly represented, making up less than 10 percent – but they’re responsible for some pretty awesome science nonetheless. Keep reading IFLScience’s list of iconic women innovators in STEM.
