MINI MONDAY: FANTABULOUS FELT FRIENDS
Materials
- Cardboard
- Felt
- Glue or Tape
- Scissors
- Marker
Directions:
- Cut a piece of cardboard to your desired size. This will be the size of your felt board
- Cut a piece of felt that is large enough to completely cover one side of your piece of cardboard. Use glue or tape to attach the felt to the cardboard. If you don’t have one single piece of felt that is large enough to cover the entire piece of cardboard, you can use multiple different pieces of felt to create a patchwork background!
- Create the pieces of your felt friend. Ask your little one to draw different shapes on the felt using markers. Practice making circles, rectangles, squares, triangles, ovals, and more! Draw a mixture of large and small shapes on a variety of different colours of felt!
- Use scissors to cut these shapes out
- Arrange the shapes on your felt board. Larger shapes could form the body of your felt friend, and smaller shapes could provide details like their eyes, nose, and mouth
- As your little one designs their felt friend, talk about what shapes they’re using and which body parts they represent
- Try different combinations and you design and re-design your fantabulous felt friend!

- Create some scenery for your felt friend? Try making trees, mountains, or rivers to show where your felt friend is!
- Give your friend a new expression? Create differently shaped eyes and mouths so your felt friend can showcase a range of emotions!
- Tell an epic tale? Create a story with your felt friend, and change the scenery and its emotions as you go!

Identifying and Regulating Emotions
Identifying and regulating emotions is an important part of early social-emotional development which helps contribute to children’s ability to make friends and interact with others successfully. As children practice identifying different emotions, they become more able to recognize and regulate these emotions within themselves.
This week’s activity helps to familiarize children with different emotions and what might cause them as they create different expressions for their felt friend and lead them through an epic tale!
Recognizing Attributes and Characteristics
Did you know that sorting and classifying are important parts of early math development? By practicing recognizing the attributes and characteristics of objects, children will be able to use this information to later help them sort these objects into groups!
This week’s activity helps children practice to recognize the attributes and characteristics of different objects by identifying the different shapes or types of body parts that might be present on their felt friend!
