Children’s Museum Named Celebrate Literacy Award Winner
On Monday, June 6, the Children’s Museum education and programming team represented by Sara Hancheruk, Director of Education and Exhibits, and Heather Armstrong, Education Coordinator, was presented the International Reading Association’s ‘Celebrate Literacy Award’ by Monica Wiebe, president of the Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg, at the Reading Council’s annual awards reception.
The Celebrate Literacy Award recognizes organizations, institutions, and individuals that have made significant literacy contributions at the local, state, or provincial level.
The Children’s Museum was recognized as leaders in the community for its ongoing literacy efforts, including: Annual I Love To Read Month Public Programming, the development of Story Line (a new literacy-themed gallery at the museum), involvement in National Family Literacy Day activities, the co-creation of Much More Munsch (a travelling exhibition highlighting the work of children’s author Robert Munsch), and the promotion and restoration of Eaton’s Santa’s Village (a seasonal display of fifteen, fairytale vignettes with accompanying classic text that once served as the holiday display at the former downtown Winnipeg Eaton’s store).
